Leif Eriksson: IMPORTANCE
Leif Eriksson is an extremely influential person as he was the first Viking to discover North America. He traveled to three places there;
His first place that he landed on he named Helluland. He named it this because of the rocky, mountainous terrain. The second place he named Markland. He named it after the large forest areas. Eriksson preferred the climate here as it wasn't as harsh as Iceland. The final place he landed on was called Vinland, named after the grapes and fruits that were grown there. |
On these voyages, Eriksson took 35 men, excluding his father as they thought he was to old and might bring bad luck to them.
